The Purpose of a Medium: Lessons from a Monk and a Tap on the Shoulder

Who is Max, I know he is at the Fleur de Lys
Max - A guide of sorts

Mediumship isn’t a light switch, [wish it was] the ability doesn't just suddenly click on one day and leave you fully able. Like any skill, developing it is a journey, a relationship, a gradual unfolding. I believe that sometimes there are big gains and at other times just quiet nudges.

Two recent experiences reminded me of this slowly but surly process. Firstly seeing, I mean really seeing a monk, and recently a very curious tap on the shoulder at a fair.

Max, The Monk

A few days before our recent visit to the Fleur-de-Lys, I saw a monk in the distance while I was camping. It wasn’t vague or half-formed, I know what I was seeing, but it felt more like an invitation than a confrontation. At that moment, I had already been reflecting upon my own development as a medium. I’d reached a stage with my clairvoyance, Clairaudience, and Claircognisance where I felt ready to move to the next level. I had spoken to spirit both in trance and also openly, and said,

"I’m ready now. Use me more as a channel."

Barry, my friend and fellow investigator, suggested that perhaps the spirit world is introducing me slowly, gently, letting me grow into the full work of being a medium, testing my readiness. I think he’s right. Since then, I’ve noticed more feelings, more knowledge, more depth than ever before.

One of the most profound things I’ve been shown is the true meaning of being a medium. It’s not simply about reconnecting people with loved ones who’ve passed, although that’s part of it, my deeper purpose is to help with what I was told are the ripples. Every soul comes here with a purpose, a kind of contract or journey they need to fulfil. Yet life, with its free will and diversions, can take us off course.

Being a medium means helping people find their way back to their path. Not forcing, not taking away choice, just shining a light so to speak so that they can see their journey more clearly and decide for themselves. Everyone has free will, but knowing the road makes the decision more meaningful.

A medium I’ve met a few times once told me that

“Everybody is already fully developed spiritually, they just have to recognise it and believe it.”

That has absolutely stayed with me. Perhaps my own lesson was finally believing in my own abilities. The more I lean into that belief, the more spirit shows me I was right to trust it.

The Tap on the Shoulder - Remember you are a Medium

The second experience I want to share was simple but striking. I was at an event, waiting to buy something at a stall. My sunglasses were perched on top of my hat. Out of nowhere, I felt a firm tap on my shoulder. Not a brush, not a breeze, an unmistakable tap, the sort you’d give a friend to get their attention. I turned around and I expected to see someone there, I looked and looked, no-one was there, I looked down, and I noticed my sunglasses on the ground.

Now, the logical explanation is obvious, simply they fell, bounced off my shoulder, and landed. That’s entirely possible. Yet the tap felt heavier, more deliberate, as if someone was saying, “Hey, you’ve dropped these.”

That’s the space where mediumship grows, in those moments where the ordinary explanation is there, but the extraordinary possibility is just as real. My job is not to cling to one or the other, but to notice, record, and let the patterns show themselves.

The monk reminded me about my abilities and readiness, that when we ask, spirit listens. The tap reminded me about humility, that sometimes the message is small, everyday, sometimes it could be almost playful but together they remind one that developing as a medium is about listening, believing fully, and helping others reconnect with their own purpose and that the ripples they cause help others connect with their purpose; the journey their soul came here to walk.
