Paranormal Investigation at Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker: What Happened During Our Overnight Ghost Hunt?

Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Essex is one of those locations that seems almost purpose-built for a paranormal investigation or a zombie apocalypse, immersive games etc. Yet the real reason for its bulding is much more fearful. A nuclear command post.
There are 3 levels underground, long corridors, dormitories, a communications room, sick bay, plant rooms and the biggest room of all is a behemouth,the Cold War operations and command centre designed to continue functioning after nuclear attack.
On Friday 4 September 2026, Barry and I returned to Kelvedon Hatch for what was my 4th and Barry's 2nd paranormal investigation of the site. We began at approximately 7pm and finally finished at 5am the following morning, spending around ten hours underground. Thanks as always go to Paula and DS Haunts for organising and hosting this investigation.
This was not a night of relentless paranormal activity, in fact, much of it was rather quiet, but several incidents remain difficult to explain.
One apparent communication became particularly intriguing once I began looking into the history of the surrounding area.
Why investigate Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker?
Built during the early Cold War, Kelvedon Hatch began life in 1952–53 as part of Britain's ROTOR air-defence programme. It later became an emergency regional government headquarters capable of accommodating hundreds of military personnel, civil servants and essential staff following a nuclear attack.
The bunker was finally decommissioned in 1992 and today survives as the Secret Nuclear Bunker museum.
Its paranormal reputation includes reports of:
shadow figures around the sick bay and dormitories;
footsteps and unexplained voices;
a female presence;
an RAF officer;
strange whistles;
an oppressive presence in some of the lower areas;
a worker associated with the plant room;
and a seemingly mischievous presence that appears to follow investigating groups.
We have encountered several of these themes during previous investigations ourselves, including moving shadows, a female voice apparently speaking with an Edinburgh accent, footsteps, giggling and activity around the communications and plant-room areas.
Would any of them return?
Our first "ghost" was quickly debunked
One of the most important parts of paranormal investigation is knowing when something isn't paranormal.
Four teams were investigating the bunker that evening, although the complex is large enough that groups can spend considerable periods without seeing each other.
Shortly after starting, we heard what appeared to be a distant woman singing.
The sound seemed to resonate through the central stairwell and became increasingly difficult to locate as we moved between levels. Another team had also begun trying to find its source.
The explanation eventually became clear.
A separate investigating group was playing trigger music on Level 1.
Mystery solved.
So, we are prepared to call something paranormal when an ordinary explanation exists, then anything genuinely unexplained becomes meaningless. That is not our game!
Returning to the sick bay
Our investigation began properly in the bunker's sick bay, where we attempted to reconnect with a female presence encountered previously. During an earlier investigation we had apparently received the words:
"I'm back here."
We interpreted the voice as having an Edinburgh accent, although who she might be — or even what "back here" meant — remains unknown.
This time we experienced considerable REM-Pod activity, although the character of the responses led us to question whether we were communicating with the same presence at all.
Instead, it appeared possible that we were dealing with the mischievous personality previously associated with the bunker, a presence which seems to joke, interact and sometimes attach itself to a particular group for much of an investigation.
As more investigators joined us around the sick bay and adjoining dormitory, several unusual things were reported.
A growling sound was heard. Several people reported moving shadows, and a number of unusual spherical light anomalies appeared on camera. One particularly bright object crossed rapidly above the camcorder's field of vision from left to right.
As always, caution is required with "orbs". Dust, insects, moisture and infrared illumination can produce very convincing effects.
Not every orb is a ghost.
The reality of paranormal investigation: waiting
Television rarely shows this part.
You see the scream.
You see the REM-Pod illuminate.
You hear the EVP.
You don't normally see the hours of sitting quietly in a dark room waiting for something to happen.
That was very much the character of this investigation.
We spent considerable time conducting vigils around the operations and presentation rooms. There were occasional anomalies, including what appeared to be a cat ball activating, but nothing sufficiently compelling to declare paranormal.
We attempted to stimulate activity using chanting, period music and even the sound of a nuclear warning siren.
There were more visual anomalies but little direct interaction, then we went into the tunnels.
The unexplained blue light in the tunnel
The tunnels have previously been among the bunker areas where we have experienced activity.This time they seemed remarkably quiet this time, there were no voices or obvious interactions. In fact, there was an unuiaual photo, but it only became significant afterwards!
Barry had taken three photographs in succession. The middle photograph contained a distinct vertical blue light that wasn't present in the images immediately before or afterwards. Reviewing our video apparently revealed two corresponding vertical flashes. At the time, we examined the tunnel for an obvious light source but could not identify one. That doesn't automatically make it paranormal. But at present, it remains unexplained.
A metallic noise in the Stairwell
Later we returned towards our base area around the galley and dining room. Before we got there we heard a distinct metallic clink in the stairwell. At the time nobody appeared to be close enough to account for it as the stairwell was empty. On its own, it would barely merit mentioning.
Inside a bunker packed with metal fittings, ventilation systems, machinery and expanding or contracting materials, isolated noises can have numerous ordinary explanations.
What happened next was considerably more interesting.
The Prime Minister's room light
At one point all ten investigators were together in the main operations area abd everyone was accounted for.We were then told that the entrance notification system upstairs, essentially a two-tone alert triggered when someone entered, had apparently been repeatedly sounding as though someone was standing in the hallway, clearly we knew that nobody was.
Back to the investigation, close to the main operations room is the small accommodation area designated as the Prime Minister's quarters. Barry heard a noise from the connecting corridor and went to investigate. Nothing. The corridor was dark and all quiet.
A few minutes later, he heard it again and this time I went with him.
When the door opened, we found the light inside the Prime Minister's room switched on.
That caught both of us by surprise. It wasn't operating from a motion sensor or timer. The light was controlled by a physical push-button switch.
I entered the room and turned it off, nobody had walked past us and nobody was hiding in the corridor. We monitored the light afterwards and invited whatever might have caused it to switch it on again but it never did.
Barry also reported hearing what sounded like a woman giggling. This is consistant with other reports. It remains one of the night's more intriguing incidents.
The strangest communication of the night
What happened next is the part of the investigation I continue to think about.
Earlier I had received a message from a family member who also has mediumship skills, somebody close to me telling me that I needed to go somewhere where communication was important, and that there would be a message waiting for me!
I didn't realise that things were now going to play out without me having seen this message until after (there is no signal under the groujnd in the bunker). So, we were in the Operations Room, the nerve centre of a bunker built around communications.
During a spirit-contact experiment using the Estes Method, a spirit appeared to repeatedly ask for me. Three times my name was called. Then fragmented information began appearing.
There were references to:
poisening me, not gas
going to sea
marching to war
the Seventh
the surname Burbridge
NEEDING to going west
and finally:
"Close the door."
At the time we didn't understand the significance.
I initially wondered whether "shut the door" was metaphorical, perhaps some suggestion of closing communication or, in paranormal terminology, closing a portal. Yet my intuitin kicked in and I understood, the military references, I knew.
The unexpected First World War connection
I have watched the video of the interaction and I began investigating whether troops had ever been associated with the area surrounding Kelvedon Hatch.
My subsequent research produced a connection with the 7th Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
The information I found indicated that units of the 7th and a chap called William Burbridge was trained here, and units were concentrated around the Brentwood area during mobilisation in August 1914, and almost certainly to be on the ground around the bunker, I now knew the 7th were indeed associated with the area before moving elsewhere before deployment.
That doesn't prove that the communication originated from a First World War soldier. nor does it establish that a particular soldier named Burbridge was communicating with us.
But it raises an interesting possibility. You see there was a soldier with that surame in the 7th Battalian who fought in France (in order to remember this soldier, his story is at the end of the blog. RIP William.) Perhaps when investigating a location we shouldn't automatically assume that every reported presence is connected with the building standing there today. The bunker was constructed in the 1950s, and the land existed long before the bunker.
For centuries it was predominantly agricultural land, farmed by the Parrish family before its Cold War acquisition.
If paranormal phenomena exist at all, perhaps the history of the ground, amnd emotional connection by people,matters just as much as the history of the structure.
A strangely quiet plant room
One final anomaly was actually the absence of something.
The plant room has been remarkably consistent on previous investigations. We have frequently associated it with the apparent presence of a worker who has seemed willing to interact. On this occasion: nothing.
We finished the night conducting further vigils around the teleprinter and communications rooms.
Several people, including me, saw occasional flashes of light and there was a persistent feeling of somebody standing close to a doorway.
However, nothing happened that I felt justified calling significant evidence. At around 5am, another Kelvedon Hatch investigation came to an end.
Is Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker haunted?
After four investigations, I still wouldn't claim that every unusual event inside Kelvedon Hatch is paranormal.
During this investigation alone we immediately demonstrated how something apparently mysterious, the distant female singing, could have a completely ordinary explanation.
Some lights may be reflections while some orbs will undoubtedly be dust or insects. The noise travels astonishing distances through concrete corridors and ventilation systems. Yet, there are the incidents that remain harder to place.
A physical light apparently switching on inside an empty room.
An unexplained vertical blue flash.
Repeated entrance alerts when everyone was accounted for.
Voices, shadows and strange sounds.
Perhaps most intriguing of all, a fragmented communication apparently referring to a military history that predates the bunker itself.
None of these things proves the existence of ghosts, but they are exactly why we keep investigating. You see occasionally you encounter something for which the answer isn't immediately obvious. Sometimes "I don't know" is the most interesting answer of all.

Midnight coffee Club
Private William Burbridge (Service Number Z/2767) was a member of the 7th (Service) Battalion, Rifle Brigade. His military journey perfectly connects the quiet farmlands around Kelvedon Hatch to one of the most terrifying, historic battles on the Western Front.
Enlistment and the Kelvedon Hatch Connection
William was a volunteer who enlisted in the early months of the war as part of Lord Kitchener’s "New Army". The 7th Rifle Brigade was raised in August 1914.
Before being deployed overseas, the massive influx of new soldiers needed a place to train. The military set up expansive tent and hutment training camps across the rural terrain of West Essex, explicitly utilizing the open fields around Kelvedon Hatch, Brentwood, and Ongar.
The Training Ground: William would have spent late 1914 and early 1915 sleeping in temporary billets, digging practice trenches, and conducting marching drills across the exact terrain where the secret Cold War bunker was excavated decades later.
Deployment: After completing this intense training cycle, William and the 7th Battalion left England, landing in Boulogne, France, on 19 May 1915.
The Tragedy at Hooge (30 July 1915)
William’s battalion was thrown into the Ypres Salient in Belgium. By late July, they were stationed near a decimated chateau and a massive mine crater in a village called Hooge.
On the night of 29 July, their sister battalion (the 8th Rifle Brigade) took over the front line, while William's 7th Battalion moved back slightly into what they hoped would be rest billets.
The Liquid Fire Attack: At 3:15 AM on 30 July 1915, the German army launched a surprise attack using a terrifying new weapon for the very first time against British troops: flamethrowers (Flammenwerfer). Jets of roaring liquid fire and thick black smoke completely engulfed the front-line trenches.
The Counter-Attack: The front line was instantly overwhelmed. William and the men of the 7th Rifle Brigade—exhausted, having just reached their rest area an hour prior—were immediately ordered to turn around and rush back to the front lines to launch a daylight counter-attack.
His Fate: Attacking across completely open, ruined ground in broad daylight against heavy German machine-gun and artillery fire was an impossible task. The historical log notes that “not a man got within 150 yards of the Germans”. William Burbridge was killed in action during the chaos of this historic, brutal day.
His Remembrance
Because of the utter destruction of the battlefield that day, William's body was never recovered. Today, he has no known grave. He is officially remembered and engraved on the panels of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium, which honours the tens of thousands of British Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient and have no identifiable resting place.
