Help! My House is Haunted; A True Story

Just some extra love
A New Home with Resident Spirit

This is, from all indications, a true story. It was told to me over the weekend by friends...I have no reason to doubt its sincerity and genuineness.

When they first moved into their new home, they were a young couple with a young, and growing family. The house had been built on, what was previously farm land but with the ever growing needs of a sprawling city, the suburbs began to grow into the country as it still does now. So, their home wasn’t ancient nor infamous and there were no whispered legends or folklore that came alongside with the keys. It was a normal house with promise, bedrooms to grow into, and a staircase worn just enough to feel lived in.

The Beginning

The first signs of a haunting were subtle, footsteps upstairs in the main bedroom that could be pout down to other noises... before long though they grew both in intensity and magnitude. Now these noises were no longer creaks nor were they heating pipes nor the sounds of a settling property. These were paced, deliberate footsteps, heel to toe and sometimes running, crossing the floor above them. Occasionally, they would hear footsteps on the stairs themselves, although this wasn't a regular event, often enough to stop conversation and make them listen.

Help, Is My House is Haunted?

One afternoon, while upstairs in the bathroom, the mother saw a young girl, described to me as perhaps nine or ten years old, walked calmly past the doorway, the child turned her head, smiled gently, and continued along the landing.

There was nothing distorted or frightening in her appearance. She looked ordinary. Peaceful. Except she wasn’t a member of the family nor had they ever seen her before.

My thoughts at this point, the resident spirit had gained enough trust to make firm contact.

They tried to rationalise it. There was stress, was it just imagination, a dream, is my house haunted? Yet, now visitors began asking unexpected questions too, “Who’s the young girl upstairs?” More than one person mentioned seeing a child at the top of the stairs. Others described catching movement on the landing.

The defining moment came when friends visited and 't their daughter went upstairs to play. After some time, the parents went to check on her. She was content.

“I’m playing hide and seek,” she said.

“With who?”

“With the other little girl.” came the reply...

There was no hesitation in her answer and it was apparently a matter-of-fact certainty.

Over time, the activity again ramped up and became more frequent, footsteps, sightings, giggling. A clear sense that someone small was moving along the upper floor.

It is important to note that nothing felt aggressive, there was no oppressive atmosphere, no objects thrown, no fear attached to the experiences. It was simply… present.

Next Steps

Still now rather concerned and wanting some clarity, the family turned to a friend who knew a priest, who also worked as a medium, to visit. He spent time upstairs, especially near the landing. His assessment was calm and measured.

The little girl, he believed, was afraid to go “over.” Her mother, he said, was waiting for her, but the child was hesitant and perhaps confused. She was simply attached to familiar surroundings and a kind family. She wasn't trapped per se, more uncertain.

Prayers were said and gentle words or encouragement spoken, words or reassurance offered. There was no drama and certainly now cinematic crescendo.

From that day on, the footsteps stopped and the sightings ceased. No linger did Visitors enquire about the young lady upstairs. The landing and main room felt different, settled.

For me, that is perhaps the most important part of this story. Paranormal activity does not always equate to threat or malevolence. Not every unexplained presence is dark, frightening, or harmful. Sometimes, if we are open to the possibility, it may simply be unresolved human experience.

In this case, it felt less like a haunting and more like a young girl seeking help, love, and reassurance. A child who needed help finding her way home. I send to that young lady me best wishes for her safe journey home and reuniting with her loved ones.

My own reflection is this, it may have been a privilege. That she felt safe enough to appear. Safe enough to smile. Safe enough to reach out, in whatever way she could, until someone listened. Once she was heard, and helped, she left.

Gratefully not in fear but perhaps, finally at peace.
