Haunted Hotels

Hidden within the Berkshire countryside, De Vere Wokefield Estate is a place where centuries of English history have formed this amazing building. Today the estate is a luxury hotel and conference venue, but the land beneath it has witnessed over nine hundred years of human activity.During a recent stay in Room M251, the history of the estate felt closer than ever because I believe that something from the past still wishes to be heard.

A History Spanning Nearly a Millennium
The land at Wokefield has been significant for centuries. In fact, Wokefield is mentioned twice in the Domesday Book of 1086, demonstrating that it was already an established settlement shortly after the Norman Conquest.
Over the following centuries the estate passed through many hands and evolved dramatically:
1321 AD – Sir Thomas Danvers granted the estate as a deer park to Roger Mortimer, an influential nobleman of the period.
1560 AD – A forest house was established for the Plowden family, and remarkably the original cellars from this building still exist today beneath the estate.
1627 AD – The mansion was sold to Peter Weaver. His granddaughter’s son, Charles, later went on to construct the mansion house that forms the basis of the present building.
1742 AD – Wokefield Park was purchased by Henry Paget, 2nd Earl of Uxbridge.
1777 AD – The estate underwent significant landscaping, with formal gardens and parkland created in keeping with the fashion of grand English estates.
1839 AD – The estate was purchased by Robert Allfrey Palmer of Huntley & Palmer Biscuits, linking Wokefield to one of Britain’s famous biscuit dynasties.
1936 AD – The house was sold to The De La Salle Brothers, a Catholic teaching organisation. The mansion became a school for 104 boys aged 15–17, where lessons included farming, gardening, and carpentry.
1984 AD – The mansion was converted into a training centre and UK corporate hub for Xerox, bringing a modern commercial chapter to the estate.
1995 AD – A further 140 acres were acquired to create the championship golf course that now surrounds the property.
2018 AD – The estate was purchased by Starwood Capital, who transformed it into a luxury country retreat. The mansion house received a £20 million restoration, returning it to its former grandeur as a hotel.
With such a long timeline of occupation, from medieval deer park to Victorian mansion, boarding school, corporate centre and luxury hotel, it is perhaps unsurprising that some visitors feel the estate retains echoes of its past, perhaps one of the UK's least known haunted hotels.
A Quiet Investigation in Haunted Hotel, Room M251
Before settling down for the night, I carried out a short investigative session inside Room M251.
Almost immediately, unusual visual activity appeared on camera. Several types of orb phenomena were recorded:
Fast-moving “zip” orbs crossing the frame
Strings of smaller orbs, appearing sequentially
Spherical pulsating orbs brightening and dimming
A slower-moving cotton-wool type formation
While orbs remain one of the most debated aspects of paranormal research, the range and behaviour of these anomalies made them noteworthy. Please do watch the video and decide for yourself.
The Disturbances in the Early Hours
The most compelling experiences occurred later during the second night of the investigation.
At 01:27 AM, a sequence of clear bangs and rapping sounds began within the room. The noises continued intermittently for approximately 30 minutes before suddenly stopping.
The room fell silent and we went back to sleep.
Then, at 02:27 AM (yes the time was exactly 1 hour later), the disturbances began again. This second period of activity again lasted around half an hour, but this time something more unusual occurred. I woke with a strong sense that someone was present in the room. The atmosphere had changed noticeably. Goosebumps appeared almost immediately and there was a powerful feeling of unease and heightened awareness, as if someone was standing nearby. This sensation remained for roughly 30 minutes before slowly fading away. As it did, the atmosphere shifted back to normal and the room became calm once again. For the remainder of the night, nothing further occurred.
"When the rapping first woke me, I briefly considered staying exactly where I was and simply listening from the comfort of the bed. Yet then the obvious thought struck me, 'this is what I do'! So up I got and quietly moved towards the part of the room where the sounds seemed strongest. At that moment it truly felt as though something was attempting to make contact. It’s a shame the experience didn’t last longer, as I would have welcomed the chance to explore that connection further."
Final Verdict
Experiences like this sit firmly within the intriguing grey area of paranormal investigation. Nothing visually manifested to the naked eye, yet the combination of orb activity, repeated knocking patterns, and the intense atmospheric shift suggests that Room M251 may hold an active presence.
I do not believe that this is residual energy from centuries of human occupation, I firmly consider that something more interactive and intelligent remains.
What is clear, however, is this:
Room M251 deserves a full paranormal investigation. Given the rich history of Wokefield Estate and the unusual activity recorded during a single overnight stay, a controlled investigation using multiple investigators, audio monitoring, and environmental sensors could reveal much more about what, or who, may still linger within the quiet walls of this remarkable mansion.
