Why do I feel bad after a Ghost Hunt? What is a Paranormal Hangover?

Feeling drained or headache on an investigation or tired and lethargic the next day?
Paranormal Hangovers are real!

I expect that you may well have been on a paranormal investigation as you are reading this blog and I also may well imagine that you will have woken up the next day feeling exhausted, and rather just not quite yourself!

You are experiencing what many investigators call a paranormal hangover. It is not a medical term, and it does not automatically mean something has followed you home. In most cases, it is I feel, likely to be a mixture of physical tiredness, emotional intensity, psychological focus, and, depending on your beliefs, energetic exposure.

A paranormal hangover is real
Feeling drained of energy...

Why does it Happen?

A paranormal investigation is not just standing in the dark with a torch and a few bits of equipment, although it is for some. One is on-alert for hours, listening for tiny sounds, watching in the shadows and you are, concurrently, monitoring all the gadgets and gizmos. Depending on the group and what you are doing, you may be asking questions into the darkness while managing your own nerves and that of the team or their reactions. All this usually happens late at night in the cold and the dark shadows of the building, no sleep, and heightened adrenaline. That alone is enough to affect the body.

Paranormal work can, and often does, go deeper than that. Many investigators are not just observing; we are emotionally and intuitively engaging with the environment. We are asking who may be present, what may have happened, and whether something is trying to or able to communicate. That level of concentration can leave you feeling drained afterwards.

A paranormal hangover can feel like tiredness, brain fog, headache, irritability, low mood, chills, strange dreams, heaviness, or a sense that you have not fully switched off from the location. Some people describe it as being energetically drained. Some would describe it as the natural crash after adrenaline and intense focus. Personally, I think both views can sit together. Whether you see it as spiritual, psychological, physical, or all three, the experience is real to the person having it. After an investigation, your body and mind need time to settle. You have spent hours tuned into an unusual environment, often searching for things that sit just outside ordinary awareness.

How do I deal with a Paranormal Hangover?

This is why grounding matters! After an investigation, drink water, eat properly and step outside into fresh air. Talk through anything that unsettled you and get some sleep, I mean real deep sleep when you can.

Importantly, if you use spiritual protection or cleansing rituals, use them because they can help create a clear ending point. Most importantly though, leave the investigation where it belongs.

A simple closing statement can help:

“The investigation is now finished. I leave what belongs here, here. I return to myself, grounded, calm, and clear.”

A paranormal hangover is not something to fear. It is a reminder that investigation work uses energy, focus, emotion, and awareness. Respect that, prepare for it, and recover properly afterwards.
