History of Merchistoun Hall

Dating back to 1745, in the depths of Horndean, Merchistoun Hall stands out as a grand and yet stoic reminder of bygone days. Yet behind its 19th-century elegance there could be something a little bit more mysterious. What is it that is now making this old building stand-out to the paranormal crowd? Is it whispers of the unseen, echoes of the past, or simply stories that refuse to be forgotten.

Apparently, originally known as Quallets, The Grove, or Grove Lodge, this estate evolved from a humble hunting lodge to a distinguished gentleman’s residence under the ownership of Admiral Sir Charles Napier, renaming it after his ancestral Scottish home.

Admiral Napier breathed new life to the estates fortunes. The surrounding grounds, once alive with hunting parties and formal gardens curated by the renowned Drover family, now stand silent… or do they? Some people think not.

Through the decades, this house has seen many transformations. From a lavish home to wartime military use as headquarters for 30 corps, and even as a furniture store after WWII, Merchistoun Hall has endured a variety of uses and even nowadays as a nursery. Yet, amid its changing fortunes, some things have remained, stories of unexplained sounds, shadowy movements, and a presence that cannot be ignored, said to be the Admiral himself.

Previous Investigations

Previous investigations at Merchistoun Hall have revealed astonishing activity. Witnesses have felt unseen hands touch them, heard disembodied voices and the unmistakable sound of footsteps pacing above. These reports happened so frequently that the caretaker would rush upstairs expecting to find someone there., yet no one was ever seen nor found. One of the most chilling moments occurred when a shadow of a hand appeared on the stage, leaving even the most sceptical among us questioning what this could be? Was it a trick of the light, or was it something simply more unexplainable?

As I prepare to conduct a new investigation into this enigmatic location, the anticipation is building. What will I uncover this time? Are the spirits of Merchistoun Hall waiting to share their stories, or are they guarding their secrets more fiercely than ever?
