Fort Widley: History, Hauntings, and the Shadows Beneath the Hill

An investigation or Part 2 of our Palmerston's Follies
Fort Widley Awaits...

Tucked away just a few miles north of Portsmouth’s bustling centre, Fort Widley stands watch over the city as one of those silent sentinels built not for beauty, but for war. Completed in 1871, Fort Widley was part of a string of fortifications known as Palmerston’s Follies, named after Prime Minister Lord Henry Palmerston, who feared a French invasion that never came... While the cannons may have been silent, something else seems to have stayed behind, something not entirely of this world.

We are investigating Fort Widley

A Fortress Born of Fear

Built between 1860 and 1868 along Portsdown Hill, Fort Widley and its sister forts were designed to defend Portsmouth from landward attack, a response to the growing threat of Napoleon III. Though the invasion never materialised, these forts stood ready, armed and formidable, and they have remained a part of Britain’s military fabric ever since.

Fort Widley served several purposes through the years. During the First World War, it acted as a transit depot. In the Second World War, it was modified to house additional personnel and became home to a bomb disposal unit and the Royal Engineers. By 1952, it had taken on a more covert role, hosting a Civil Defence emergency control centre in its deep-set magazines.

In 1972, the fort was handed over to the local council and is now partially used by the Peter Ashley Activity Centres, offering horse riding, air rifle shooting, archery, and more. But despite these wholesome daytime activities, it's the night-time atmosphere that really draws people in.

Where will we find the Spirits?

Where the Shadows Linger

Many who walk the fort’s cold, narrow tunnels speak of a presence, an unmistakable feeling of being followed or watched. It’s not just imagination. Countless visitors, paranormal investigators, and even sceptics have reported strange and chilling experiences within the fort’s walls.

Some of the most compelling stories come from the tunnels and mortar batteries that surround the dry moat. These dark, echoing corridors seem to amplify even the smallest sound, but not all the noise has a known source. Phantom footsteps, sudden whispers, and unexplained cold spots are frequent occurrences.

One of the most chilling tales is that of a little drummer boy, said to have fallen to his death down a spiral staircase after being pursued by an officer. His faint drumming is still occasionally heard in the dead of night. Another persistent figure is a seven-foot-tall male spirit, often seen holding a lantern and silently watching from the shadows before vanishing into thin air.

There’s also the ghost of a sergeant major, recognised by his distinctive whistle, a sound that has startled many investigators when heard echoing through otherwise empty corridors. Add to this the tragic story of a female prostitute, reportedly raped and murdered at the fort. Her spirit is said to linger, protective of two child ghosts that are often sensed during vigils and séances. It is believed that her energy is maternal, offering comfort to the frightened little ones who never found peace.

Ghost Hunts at Fort Widley

Today, Fort Widley is a paranormal hotspot. Events hosted by teams like Ghosthunting.uk allow brave guests to explore the haunted tunnels, participate in vigils, and even use ghost hunting equipment like Ouija boards, EMF detectors, and spirit boxes.

Paula Church of Ghosthunting.uk describes the tunnels as “unbelievably atmospheric.” Se explained that the structure’s acoustics, layout, and visual phenomena like “corner-of-the-eye” sightings can play tricks on the mind, but, we believe, not always. Many of the reported sightings and audio recordings have remained unexplained.

The fort’s unique structure, made of thick Victorian brickwork, creates a labyrinth of passages, dead ends, and unexpected drops in temperature. Even seasoned investigators have reported that the energy changes dramatically from one room to another, particularly in the deeper levels and older storage chambers.

Echoes of the Past

Whether you’re a die-hard sceptic or an open-minded explorer, Fort Widley offers a truly unique experience. It’s a place where history and mystery collide, where the past feels just within reach, especially when the air turns cold and the sound of footsteps trails just behind you.

If you dare to visit, prepare for more than just a history lesson. The spirits of Fort Widley do not always perform on command, but they are believed to still walk the same halls they did over a century ago.

One question remains: If these walls could talk… would you stay to hear what they have to say?
