The Kelvedon Hatch Secret nuclear Bunker has always held a special place in my investigations. I have been there several times, and each visit has surpassed the last in terms of activity, atmosphere, and evidence. This latest investigation, however, was nothing short of spectacular, one of the best paranormal experiences I have ever had.
A Familiar Yet Uneasy Descent
Arriving at 8 PM, with the summer light still lingering, there was a buzz of excitement in the air. For me, as an ex-military man, there is something eerily familiar about walking into an abandoned military facility. Although Kelvedon Hatch was decommissioned in 1992, much of the original material remains. The smell of old concrete, the hum of the underground air, and the knowledge that you are about to descend 125 feet beneath the surface makes the heart race.
This is not just any haunted location. It is a time capsule of the Cold War, steeped in secrecy and fear. Somewhere within those walls, something or someone else remains, lingers, waits.
Setting Targets for the Night
Going in, Barry and I had specific intentions. we wanted to:
Recreate the footstep phenomena reported in the Prime Minister’s room.
Reconnect with the gentleman spirit I had previously contacted in the teleprinter room.
Reach out again to the engineer in the plant room.
Confront some of the bunker’s darker energies that had unsettled me on past visits.
Our kit for the night was lean but effective: Voice Recorders, IR cameras, cat balls (one modified with its motion sensor removed to rule out false positives), and motion sensors. Interestingly, the motion sensors stayed silent all night, but the IR and spirit balls were incredibly responsive.
What Happened at Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker
Even during the initial walk-round, activity began. Voices were heard, a lady’s voice in the stairwell and the BBC communications room, and later men’s voices near the toilets. The latter could possibly be explained by the building’s ventilation shafts, which carry sound, but the woman’s voice defied easy explanation.
Throughout the night, orbs appeared in abundance. Perfectly spherical, zipping across the room; pulsating spheres; strings of orbs; and a type I have only rarely encountered, a flattened cotton wool ball of light, seen immediately after a spirit promised to reveal itself. The orbs 'seemed' to react intelligently to our presence and questions.
Direct Voice Phenomena: A Spirit Speaks
One of the night’s highlights was a DVP (Direct Voice Phenomenon) that both Barry and I heard with our own ears. It was a clear, disembodied voice that neither of us could immediately decipher. On playback, the words became chillingly clear:
“I’m back here”
Spoken in an East Coast Scottish accent, possibly from Edinburgh area.
Hearing a spirit in real-time, without the need for equipment, is rare and profoundly moving. It grounds the experience in the moment, making you acutely aware that someone, or something, is there with you.

Growls, Knocks, and Cold Spots
We also captured an audible growl in the stairwell, low, guttural, and unlike anything environmental, although I did think it may have been my stomach rumbling (an investigator's 'normal' when listening for sounds!!). Cold spots appeared throughout the venue, persistent and unexplainable by airflow. Knocks and taps were heard in the tunnels, often at opposite ends simultaneously, accompanied by shadows darting in the distance. These phenomena echoed previous reports from the site, reinforcing the consistency of its hauntings.
Room-by-Room Encounters
Prime Minister’s Room: Orbs and faint knocking; a space heavy with authority and residual energy.
Lecture Room: Multiple orb sightings.
Communications Room: Spirit ball activity on request.
Plant Room: Spirit ball activity responding to music; the spirit seemed to know our names.
Map Room: Significant spirit conversation and playful interaction with the ball. The spirit here had a sense of humour, interrupting me with flashes every time I tried to speak, while allowing Barry to ask questions uninterrupted. Laughter filled the room as the spirit’s personality shone through.
Sick Bay: Orbs and DVP activity, a truly charged environment.
Dormitory: Spirit ball responses to music requests, as if the spirits wanted to join in.
In the canteen, an unsettling presence loomed, while outside the room, we sensed movement, perhaps the same mischievous “joker” spirit following us. This character’s playful nature threaded throughout the night, blending humour with the eerie.

The Joker, The Lady, and the Shadows
The investigation revealed multiple entities:
The Joker: A playful, mischievous spirit who interacted intelligently, often at my expense.
The Lady: A female voice heard repeatedly in stairwells and rooms, suggesting a lingering presence.
The Engineer: Making himself known in the plant room, responding to music and names.
An Unknown Scottish Spirit: Speaking directly to us in a DVP, a hauntingly personal moment.
A Watchkeeper Spirit: Keeping watch still in the teleprinter annex.
Whether residual or intelligent, these presences were undeniably active.
A Surge of Energy in the Witching Hours
Around midnight, the energy waned briefly, only to surge back with force between 3:00 and 4:00 AM, the classic “witching hour.” During this time, activity peaked: more orbs, more intelligent responses, and a feeling of being surrounded by unseen company.
Time became meaningless underground. What felt like moments stretched into hours, and before we knew it, dawn had arrived. Emerging into the morning light at 5 AM, we were exhilarated, exhausted, and deeply moved.
Reflections: Why Kelvedon Hatch Captivates
As both an investigator and academic, I am struck by the layered nature of this haunting. There are rational explanations for some phenomena, sound travel, psychological suggestion, but there are also anomalies that defy dismissal. The intelligent interactions, especially with the Joker and the Scottish voice, suggest something more than residual energy.
This night confirmed why Kelvedon Hatch is one of the most active, compelling sites I have ever visited and investigated in. Its blend of history, emotional energy, and environmental conditions creates the perfect storm for paranormal phenomena.

The Call to Return
The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker continues to challenge and inspire me. Every visit deepens the mystery rather than solving it. This night, with its laughter, voices, and undeniable presence, has cemented it as one of my top investigations.
There is no doubt that I will return, there are still spirits waiting to tell their stories. And I intend to listen. The adventure continues, beyond the veil...
